There's nothing shady about it. Most of my banking is done with Presidents
Choice, a virtual bank. Therefore I must deposit cheques, m.o.'s, etc.
through an ATM. Their time to clear a cheque is about 5 business days.
That is the reason that I stated in the posting that the preferred method of
payment is either cash or PayPal. In each of those ways I will receive the
funds immediately. Additionally, should I have included a standard personal
cheque in the payment methods, and the cheque not clear, I get nailed at the
bank for that with a service charge. Presidents' Choice no fee account is
almost 100% just that. However, if I write an NSF cheque or deposit one
that cannot clear due to insufficient funds, there is a $35.00 fee. And,
should I get nailed with a $35.00 service charge from a potential buyer, I
have no guarantee of recouping those funds.

While I can certainly understand your quandary as to why I've put a holding
period for certified cheques or b.m.o.'s, don't you think it may have been
more appropriate to ask why rather than, off the bat, making accusations of
potential dishonesty on my part?

I understand about the personal cheque not certified because you do run a
great risk of not getting the cash. However, with certified, the person paid
the extra cash to get it certified so that there is no risk of you not
getting your money. If someone sent me a certified cheque or money order
(both guaranteed funds), I would not hold the merchandise any longer than
what it takes to get the cheque or mo into my hand. I know about pc banking,
I am in the process of switching everything over to them. They aren't
completely a 'virtual bank' as they do have kiosks in the Loblaws stores,
they just don't have the big fancy banks that RBC and other banks have that
their customers are paying for (hence the need for outstanding fees). All I
can say is that I would not give someone a certified cheque or a money order
without getting the merchandise immediately. And there's certainly no way
that I would be carrying that kind of cash around.
