Perfect diamonds
I saw a report on Dateline the other night about a lab that makes perfect
diamonds. Supposedly a $5000 diamond will sell for $500. It's a
surprise to me that this is new; I thought they had been making man-made
perfect diamonds for years.
Does anyone have any info on this? Does anyone know if they are
available yet? If not, when?
The latest vintage of Russian material is magnetic and therefore, in loose stones, can be readily
detected via their magnetic properties. Plans for a relatively simple detection device are currently
being implemented. The incentive to develop laboratory grown (synthetic) diamonds is significant.
Because something increases in price does not mean it is increasing in
value, especially if we take inflation into account. The reason why
goods are higher priced is because inflation causes the currency to be
worth less. You are just getting more currecy because the currency
is worth less. At least this has been the trend in North America for
the last twenty years. But, do diamond's actually gain any value?
With DeBeers keeping its firm control over the market, the market is
experiencing artificially high retail prices. But I think you can
make money with diamonds if you buy them rough or wholesale (fat chance
this will happen anytime soon).
