Platinum Engangement Ring w/ White Gold Wedding Ring???

What do you think? My fiance's e-ring has 4 round diamonds on each
side of the main diamond. The ring/setting is platinum.

We went and looked at wedding rings and she loves the wedding ring
with diamonds that matches her e-ring. She said she doesn't care if
its platinum and would be happier if I didn't pay the extra $$$ for
platinum. She says she can't even tell the difference.

Will this be a problem in the future? Will one discolor? What about
if she wishes to 'fuse' them together later?

If the one ring is platinum, you are better off from an esthetic point of
view to buy the matching band of the same metal, even if it is more $$$.
White gold will not "discolor", but the ring you were looking at was most
likely rhodium plated. Rhodium is a metal in the platinum family and is very
white, unlike white gold wich has a slight yellow tinge. I do not consider
this yellow color a drawback, if both rings were white gold. But since, as
the rhodium wears off, the white gold will show more and more, you will
either have to maintain the rhodium, or live with slightly unmatched rings.
If you discuss this with the salesperson, the store might have a ring in
stock that is not plated, and you can see what exactly the difference is and
if you can live with it. Any reputable salesperson will be happy to explain
the rhodium plating further, if you have questions. As to soldering the set
together after the ceremony, there would be no problem with joining white
gold and platinum, so that need not be a consideration.

Answer one question. Is your fiance going to put the engagement
ring and the wedding band on the same finger side by side. If yes then
forget white gold. Get one thing in your head. Gold when it comes out of the
ground is yellow and to get white gold you mix it up with alloys and then
rhodium plated. Rhodium plating will wear off depending on wear and tear.
Think what will happen to your white gold ring when it is worn besides the
platinum ring. I have seen this happen couple of times and the Rhodium of
the white gold wedding band will NOT last long. I can see it right now that
6 months down the line you will start seeing the yellow tint in the ring.
You are also thinking of "fusing" them together. It will not be a problem to
solder them together. But once again I feel like you are installing a Benz
AMG Engine in a Honda. It will drive but the feel is just NOT right.
