Types Of Postpartum Depression
I am saddened, sickened and appalled by this woman, mother of five children,
killing all of them one by one by submerging their heads underwater in a
bathtub. And supposedly this all being caused by post partum depression. I
never had post partum depression, I know that it is caused by one's hormones
readjusting after preganancy and I have several friends who had a tough time,
but geez, this is just so beyond imaginable. And if she suffered with it after
the fourth child two years ago, what were they doing having another child??
Really sad . I cannot imagine being in such a place that you would think it
was reasonable to take the lives of your children. I know Im opening a
hornet's nest here, but I really I've never really bought into temporary
insanity as a acceptible defense and this will fall in the same catagory.
I really can't judge,although when I was depressed,I didn't have enough energy
to get out of bed, much less strike out at someone. A psychiatrist commented
that violence towards others is not normally a consequence of post partum
depression. I suppose anything is possible though.
Postpartum depression can, in extreme cases, make a new mother
psychotic. As you say, you've never experienced it. It is real and can
be as horrifically devastating as we've seen in this case.
Hard as it is to refrain from judging, I suggest folks try. Mocassins,
mile, etc.
Post partum depression is different from the *baby blues* due to hormone
levels. A very significant symptom of post partum depression is a *fear of
hurting the baby*.
As far as having more kids, even with the best of planning, people do get
pregnant. It happens. Her doctors, husband and family were all aware of her
problems. She didn't hide it.
It sounds like this started out, 2 years ago, as post partum depression and
esculated from that. She tried to commit suicide previously also. She was
receiving treatment and MEDICATIONS for her depression. very powerful
medications.
MEDICATIONS can cause a person to be psychotic. Even the everyday
antidepressants!
People also aren't aware that not everyone that suffers from depression,
cries and is lethargic. Some people with depression are sad, aggitated,
aggressive and anxious.
From the reports, it looks like SEVERAL people dropped the ball! This woman
was trying to get help, and thought she was being helped. A woman with post
partum depression, or even simple depression, should NOT be left alone with
one small child, let alone 4!
Society still doesn't accept the fact that some people suffer from illness
(mental or physical) or that there are some people that need help
occasionally. We have no compassion or understanding past anything we have
experienced ourselves. Heck, if we've experienced something, and managed,
then everyone else should. We treat others as if they are weak if they need
help. We're all different.
