Diamond: How big?
Sounds odd, I know, but I'm looking for a pair of gold
square hoop earrings, maybe 1.5 to 2 inches wide. Has
anyone seen anything like this around?
I may be overstating it, but a few years ago I cruised the district. In one
of the "real" stores (not just a booth), I almost got snookered on some
pretty little diamond earrings. When they discovered I was from out of
town, the price kept dropping. Then I asked for a loupe and then asked them
to clean the earrings for me. They didn't want to clean them! I discovered
why: there was a diagonal crack on one of the diamonds. These weren't huge
stones, just four on each earring, forming a square, but the crack was
really obvious to me so I'm sure they knew about it. It was not Cartier or
Tiffany, but it was one of the other "name" stores on 5th Avenue. Pfoooey
on them.
If they are going to be in New York City they can check out the
diamond district which is located in Manhatten on 47th Street and 5th
Avenue. There are quite a few independent jewlers in the area, they
should be able to see what they like and don't like-while checking out
the different prices.
