Any idea about this 'cult' skin care company?
I am a holistic health practitioner and I work at a holistic clinic.
Our clinic just added holistic skin care to our menu of services. The
owner and esthetician search far and wide to find a product that would
be ethical, natural and uses organic ingredients whenever possible.
Most companies will only divulge active ingredients, but tell you the
rest of the formula is a 'trade secret'. So the owner decided to go
with the cult/status line of Y**-K* Paris.
When the esthetician asked
for an ingredients list, they would not provide one until a $4000
purchasing contract was signed. Once the product was
delivered we discovered that the product line is not 100% botanical.
Mineral and Petroleum based products. The product literature is so
full of obvious errors to even a novice herbalist.
For example--...hypericum extract from coffee beans; ...karite tree
nut extract and shea butter;
...spermaceti, a natural wax obtained from the finest botanicals;
...icthiol a botanical extract;...icthammol a soothing botanical
extract; ...wintergreen essential oil known for its skin calming
abilities, et cet. When we called to ask them why such a costly
product line ($60 for an 8 ounce wholesale back bar cleanser) would
use cheap petrochemicals, they responded by telling us, 'We use only
the finest quality pharmaceutical grade mineral oils and petrolatum
from the earth' I just about fainted.
I am most disturbed that they claim to do all this botanical research
but cannot produce research documentation.
Nor will they tell you who they use for consultants. When we asked
for MSDS sheets, they also told us 'that can take a while to prepare'.
Any legitimate company will provide MSDS on demand. Their use of
whale oil is what I am most disturbed about. No where in their
product literature do they show the slaughter of sperm whales for
their spermaceti glands, the destruction of the earth to mine the
shale oil beds to get their 'botanical extract' ichthiol/ichthammol
(sulfonated shale oil) and no where in their literature are photos of
oil wells pumping out the 'finest mineral oils of the earth'.
I am wondering what I can do as a consumer and practitioner to make
this company accountable for the claims they make. I have already
contacts the regular marine conservation agencies who informed me the
use of whale oil in cosmetics has been banned by the US and the EU.
Should I contact the FTC, FDA and anyone else???
Thanks for listening and any advice you can give.
