Silver Cross Ring, wedding rings...
I'm engaged! heh.... since this past Sunday in fact. Well, here's my
question: What are your experiences with buying a wedding/engagement
ring?
We are going out this weekend to buy one. Don't know price range at the
moment. Any suggestions? Comments? I'm definately going with a
diamond of some sort, leaning toward a solitaire. Anybody got a silver
instead of the traditional gold band/ring? Also what kind of price
range did you all go with?
It sounds like you wear only silver, like me! You may have a hard time
finding a silver ring if you go to a traditional type of jewelry store (a
gallery might make one for you). I think in general, they don't put very
expensive stones of any type into a silver settings (at least I have not seen
any). I'm not sure about this, but I think it is because silver can be very
soft, and it tarnishes.
You can also go with white gold, or platinum. I went with white gold because
it is less expensive (my ring was bought from a relative who is a jeweler, so
I don't have any experience in buying them at a store). We will be buying
our bands at a store, and just yesterday I was browsing at the mall to see
what was out there, and I saw some bands and solitaires in white gold at most
larger chain type stores. Sorry, but I did not check any prices. One problem
with white gold- it can look slightly yellowish in certain light, so if you
want something really silvery, go with platinum. But, platinum is very
expensive.
I got a white gold instead of gold OR silver. You also have the choice of
platinum, and now, titanium. Although titanium hasn't caught on yet, so it
will be hard to find. If you want QUALITY, expect to spend at least $1,000.
After that, look for a store that lets you pick out the band and stone
seperately. That way, you get exactly what you want, rather than a really
good looking band with a poor quality diamond.
If you happen to find a store like this, you are in good luck. Don't be
afraid if the sales people are dressed in t-shirts and jeans. It just goes
to show you that they aren't trying to impress you with how THEY look. The
sales person should show you the different bands in the metal you want. If
you haven't made up your mind about metal, let them know.
My fiance was going to get me a platinum, but then found out the platinum
rings of the same size and shape were MUCH heavier. Having a small frame, my
poor finger would lose all muscle control after having to hold that thing up
for a week. And silver requires a LOT of cleaning to keep it from
tarnishing, (thus, many stores don't carry silver anymore) so white gold was
best for me.
