Signs And Symptoms Of Manic Depression. Wife's manic episode ?

My wife of 9 years has
recently came out of a depression after taking Prosac for two months.
That was last Novemeber. Over the last two months, she has changed so
much that now I believe she may be in a manic episode. This is the first
time I have seen her in such a manic mood. After reading some of the
material on the manic depression website, I think her symptons fit very
well with the description of bipolar disorder.

Your wife sounds a lot like me. Prozac tends to bring out mania in manic
depressives . I was not diagnosed Manic depressive but depressive, was put on
Prozac, and this is almost EXACTLY what happened to me. You aren't alone. What
you need to do is call her doctor, share your thoughts and concerns with
him/her. Get her off the Prozac, it got worse, a lot worse, before it got
better. Of course DO NOT do this without her doctors approval.

VERY GOOD question! I;'m sure it's different for different people. I
unfortunately lost everything before I went for help. PLEASE don't let this
happen to her. My suggestion is go talk to her doctor like I said earlier, get
a book or at least some info, a brochure, internett source, anything you can on
manic depressive and ask her very nicely if she would at least read it. Reading
something about manic depression when you have it is a lot like readiong about
your own life. She may realize what's happening to her from reading it. Also,
she is feeling REALLY good right now so she may be resentful if you keep
pushing at her saying something is worng. Support her, tell her she is
wonderful, try to sweetly and gently get her to go for help...not because
something is wrong but because she is so great and so worthy of it.

You can't. She needs to realize this herself. I'm sorry but this is true. When
in a manic episode, you think it's everyone elkse who is wrong and has the
problems, you're perfect. Make sense? No, but it's true. Those manic moods can
be just as dangerous or even more so than the depression. Keep an eye on her.
The only way you can force her into treatment is if she poses a threat to
herself or others and can have her innvoluntarily committed for up to 48 hours.
(depending on where you live) I would ONLY do this if all other things fail)

I know what you are going through. If you want to talk more or have ANY
questions, please feel free to email me at any time. I would be more than happy
to help in any way possible. It's a subject and area that is close to my heart.
I applaud you for taking this effort to educate yourself and get your wife the
help she needs. I wish my ex husband was the same way. It takes a lot of
courage to stand up to this illness and you have taken the first step.
