Ruby Wedding Ring Set, advice on engagement ring ?

I live in BC, Canada and am looking for an engagement ring. I'm looking at
spending around the 5k for a ring/setting total with taxes.

I went to birks and they want 5150$ cdn for a .41, vs2, F colour, excellent
cut with an 18k white gold setting and a .02 saphire built into it.

I talked to my friend who's dad is a jewler and for 5500 cdn I can get a .7,
VS1, F with the same ring custom made, however it's a Very Good cut.

My question is, for the latter, is this a good deal? and is there a big
difference in noticable quality and price between the excellent cut and very
good cut? The diamonds I am taking about are "princess cut".
I personally would suggest going with the .7
I am not a diamond expert and I can't offer any expert opinion on visible
difference between Excellent and Very Good cut, but coming from an average
joe (which I am when it comes to diamond), size does matter. Before I went
into a diamond store, the only thing I knew about judging diamond is size.
and honestly, most folks pay attention to the size first when you show the
ring.

I thought we were discussing what's a better buy and not social and cultural
meanings of a bigger diamond.
But in any case, most women seem to give the impression that bigger means
more love and men are generally pressured to give the biggest rock beyond
what they can afford. After all, his bride, her bridesmaids, all her
friends and co-workers, all his friends and co-workers, parents, aunt Sally,
uncle Leo, grandma, hundreds of wedding guests, and anyone else walking on
the street seeing them together, will all be judging him and his manhood,
based on the size of the stone on her finger.
