Postpartum depression or child abuse?
they have joined a
postpartum depression support group and are trying to put their
family back together.
Thing is, if this where a Father - he'd be instantly put on death row with 7
minutes to go before visiting the gas chamber.
Come on, people, wake up. Look at how perverted the "justice system" is.
We let people out of jail because of their gender or their "victim status",
we put people into jail for victimless crimes (like smoking pot) and throw
away the key! W.T.F. over?!?
A lot of people don't realize that a psych defense does not
generally mean the person gets off completely.
Post-partum or PMS killers still get the rubber room for
many years.
Drunks do stupid things, but are still held responsible.
I understand that rationale even less than psych defense.
I have my doubts that "treatment classes" for domestic
violence can do much good when the person did it
while they were drunk. When they're drunk again, do
people really remember what they learned in classes?
(I don't drink, but I'm not anti-liquor, more of an outsider)
The Andrea Yates case, and the other case below, have received a lot
of attention. Many of us have wondered if 'postpartum depression' has
become the excuse de jour. Here are some facts. There's much more at
each of these sites.
Something I've noticed in many of these cases (but not the Yates case)
is that the mothers are often much older than most mothers. (Or maybe
it's just the cases that get publicity.) Is being an older mother or
birthing multiples a risk factor?
Postpartum psychosis, though rare (1 in 1,000) must be
considered an emergency and treated immediately. The mother
usually responds quickly to medication and is most cases will
need to recover in a hospital or clinic. She will also need to
know that she is at risk (40-100%) for developing postpartum
psychosis sometime in the future and likely recur if she
should have another child. There is some limited research
that mothers at risk may benefit from the use of estrogen
after birth to prevent psychotic depression.
It used to be that being drunk was not a defense. By today's policical
standands, which seem contradictory in nature or even fact.. drinking
alcohol, or better yet, announcing that you are an alcoholic, sets the stage
for mitigating circumstances. Medicare will even pay you disability
payments! Of course then you are ENTITLED to food stamps and a whole host of
other governments sponsored programs as well. Drug users fall into this
catagory as well. To me, that's like having the government subsidize an
"illness'... they give money so those affected can easily afford to support
their habits.
