Phone Harassment?
I am recently divorced, but my ex-wife keeps calling me both
at work and at home, sometimes up to 20 times a day. Last
night, she kept calling and leaving messages on my machine
as late as 11 PM. In some calls, she threatens to go to my
work place and badmouth about me in front of my boss.
Is this even legal? I am thinking about calling police, but
not sure if there is anything they can do about. I guess I
can change my home phone number but it will be very
inconvenient to change my work phone number. Please let me
know if there is anything I can do to stop her.
One thing I would do is make sure I keep copies of these messages for future
reference, if and when you end up in court. I believe that since leaving them on
a machine, you know you are being recorded, you bypass that tricky little thing
like consent. They inherently give conscent by leaving the message. And you may
need these to prove a case, if you end up in court.
You could check with your lawyer, and it might not hurt to call the phone company
and find out if they know what the laws are regarding phone harrassment. Seems to
me there was even some information in the phone book about this. Check that out
as well. It also probably doesn't hurt any future cases to just give the Police a
phone call just to have it on record that you wish for this to stop.
