natural skin tone film?
I am sure this ? has probably passed through this NG before, but here goes.
I am interested in doing some portrait work out side, and would like to
arrange the shoots to be on sunny days. Please give recommendations on a
good film for this situation, a film that will natural rendition of the
persons skin.
On the same note, please give recommendations for a very good film for
indoor portraits.
-I would suggest an overcast day rather than a sunny day if possible. An
overcast day will give of a softer more pleasing light than a sunny day
which may be much more harsh and create more shadows. On overcast days,
Kodak Porta 160VC is very nice. Pleasing skin tones with saturated
colors. Indoor portrait would be the same unless (lack of) light is an
issue. Then look at the Portra 400NC and Portra 800 which are both
good. I have not been impressed with Portra 400VC. More grain than VC.
If you want to go slide film, Fuji Astia 100 is the way to go. For a
different look, try Kodachrome 64. Very artistic.
-Are we to make some assumption regarding the color of the skin to be
photographed?
I have been very happy with Agfa emulsions when shooting in Central
American and South America, with Kodak and Fuji in Northern Europe and
with Fuji in Japan. I do not have any experience with photographing
very dark skin, but there may be some films that do better than
others.
