Mortgage Brokers Association of New Zealand (NZMBA). Their website has
some good tips (www.nzmba.co.nz). They have an ethical code which
members must follow and if there are any problems they are subject to a
strict complaints procedure.
Also ask if you are going to be charged a direct fee and avoid those
who want to charge a fee before they do anything.
Most of all - make sure you can afford the loan, especially if interest
rates go up. Remember the broker is trying to sell you something for
which he/she gets a tasty commission and once they have that, their
involvement ends. They can afford to be pushy and to promise the earth
(more so than a bank would if you dealt with them directly), because if
you default, it's not them that has to carry the can, but you and the
bank.
