Earning Miles with credit card -- worth it???

I travel maybe once or twice a year, and after looking at several
credit cards that offer miles based on purchases, I noticed most only
offer points/miles if you purchase from certain places, mostly hotels,
car rentals, airlines, etc. Is there a credit card that lets someone
earn miles based on all purchases? I only use my credit card for
things like gas and on occasion small stuff (DVD's, books, small
repairs, etc), but I generally pay it off each month. For someone like
me is there any option for earning miles?

Also generally how do the points/miles work? I've seen some cards that
give you like 10,000 miles for signing-up or smiliar large amounts of
points per certain purchases. How does this work exactly??? Is it
like 10,000 miles means I can purchase say a round-trip ticket from
Dallas to Phoenix (about 2000 miles round trip) with 8000 points left?
I don't think it's that simple, but I can't find anything about how
this works online.
-Check out http://www.bankrate.com for answers to questions regarding
anything involving credit cards and banking.

-American express has several cards that award points for purchases. The
points can then be used as 'miles' or points for awards for shopping,
hotels, etc, etc.

Many of my Delta miles have come from purchases rather than flights.

-I've got thousands of points with LH that are virtually worthless.
The tax that I have to pay to fly LH is more than the total fare
that I have to pay to fly with FR. The LH points are only
worth using if I need to travel at very short notice, and just
by chance LH have FF availability left.

The idea that I might 'buy' some more points on LH is laughable.

-I collect both aeroplan points and airmiles.

For the AIR CANADA Aeroplan Points I use my CIBC visa card for the
purchases I make monthly that accepts credit card . I pay it off every
month and never pay interest
I also have the airmiles card and airmiles M/C which I also use for bills
and purchases .

When I collect 25000 aeroplan points I book a trip somewhere in Canada or
The USA and then start collecting again

I also use airmiles to fly in Canada or to get free merchandise.
I like to fly off season so there usually isn't any problem getting a seat .

In February I used airmiles to get a hotel room in San Diego for 4 nights
