So what ideas have you had so far for gifts?
One of Cuba's most amazing indigenous art collections is exhibited in the
little town of Banes, a 40-minute drive southeast of Guardalavaca Beach,
where the unique Museum of Indian Civilization is located.
Why there? Because 33 percent of Cuba's archaeological wealth is located
in Holguin Province and most of the digs are in or around Banes, site of
the pre-Columbian Bani Indian settlement. The Indian cemetery recently
discovered in Chorro de Maita near Banes is the largest known to exist in
the Antilles and of particular interest as a point of contact between
American and European cultures. The skeletons found there-all in good
condition-included an Indian woman buried with lavish jewelry, two
children adorned with European necklaces and bracelets and a Spaniard.
Plans are to use one section of the cemetery as an archaeological museum.

Meanwhile, the existing museum in Banes exhibits some of the art and
artifacts created by the Taino Indian farmers and artisans who inhabited
the area until the end of the 16th century. They used shells, rocks,
bones, ceramics, wood and metal to fashion tools, utensils, figures, and
jewelry related to their culture and customs. Incredibly, their work
often seems more modern than art of a later period.
