Does Hosted CRM has a different database structure ?

I have a standard CRM 3 on W2003 installation in which all works fine. Some
people work from outside and have access to the webclient, which we made
available through a simple http-connection (I know, it is not secure, but
that is not so important for the moment - more testing than whatever).

Now, we would like some external people to sync their Outlook with CRM
without any need to setup VPN or whatever - straight over http. If I
understand it well, this won't work because those users are not in the same
domain.

However, if I understand it well again, this should work with the hosted
version of MS CRM. I am now trying to install that, to see where this leads
me.

I could not straight forward install this on the existing installation, so I
uninstalled the existing installation, leaving all the data intact.

When I now try to install the hosted version and when I try to connect to
the existing databases, I get an error the databases are not compatible.

So I have two questions:

1/ Am I right on my assumption that the hosted version will allow me to sync
Outlook over "plain" internet with MS CRM, even if the PC's are not in the
same domain ? If not, is this possible in a different way ?

2/ If so, are the databases indeed incompatible ? From what point of view ?
What should I do to solve this ? Reinstall the whole thing and re-import the
existing data ?

Many thanks for any remarks or suggestions !
Question 1: There is no way with CRM 3 to sync Outlook with CRM over http
(i.e. plain internet), whatever domain they're in. Hopefully this will be
possible with CRM 4

Question 2: Can you post the full error details ?
