Heartburn And
Does anyone else experience heartburn when drinking homebrew? The SO and
myself both get heartburn when drinking my homebrew.. After 1 gulp, we
normally both look at each other and say "feel that?" It's almost
simultaneous.
It's to the point now that if I plan on drinking homebrew, I take an over
the counter heartburn medication about 30min prior to. This is the only
time I get heartburn by the way... it isn't like I have an ongoing issue
with getting heartburn.
When I first started kegging was when we first noticed it. We thought it
was the co2 verses naturally carbonating the brew with sugar. But, I just
bottled some about 2 weeks ago... I cracked one open last night and wham,
heartburn city. I'm thinking it's do to having too many yeast still in
suspension..? Heck, I don't know. Maybe the beer is to young and needs to
be aged longer? I tend to drink my beer within a few weeks after
bottling/kegging.
Can anyone help me please?
Alcohol relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter--the band of muscle that
helps prevent relux of acid from the stomach from occuring (so does
chocolate, caffeine, nicotine, fatty foods and carminatives--found in mints,
along with some medications). That's probably what's going on. Why you are
noticing it now? There may be another contributing factor, too. (Coffee in
the afternoon will often do it to me, but not in the morning). Has your
waist band gotten tighter since you've started brewing. That can
contribute to reflux. Sounds like you've found an adequate solution
