Free Credit Report Check Score Online
I am in Canada but I have been told that the credit rules are the same here.
I had a bankruptcy discharged in 1992
and it still shows on my credit report ....what gives???
Also, another question.
Since then I have been a good boy and paid everything on time. Bought a car,
paid it off. Credit cards all on time etc, yet my FICO score is low. I
realize that the Bk brings it down but is there any way I can bring it up?
Through those years there were about 3 or 4 cars that I paid off as well as
a few other things that HAVE NOT shown up on the credit report. Is there
some way that I can force these places to report the good credit or is there
some sort of documentation that I can submit to get credit for these perfect
accounts.
The bankruptcy should be reported for 10 years (assuming your system
is like our system). Get a copy of your credit report, and see what
the reporting date is, and see if 10 years has passed since then.
If so, contact each of the 3 major credit agencies, and follow their
written procedures for correcting your credit file. Don't use the
telephone or E-mail, those are not binding methods of communication.
As for the items that are not reported, it depends on the creditor.
If you used a major lending service like GMAC or Ford Motor Credit,
they certainly would report your credit activity. Joe's Car Lot, where
he does his own loans, might not report your history, or even be unable
to report. All you can do is call each creditor, and ask if they will
report your history. Some might, others will consider it too old to
bother with.
As far as why you are getting a low score, there has to be something
in there that is taking you down. Check your report at all 3 major
credit agencies. In the US, you are entitled to one free credit report
per year per agency if you apply in writing. With a bankruptcy in the
past, any subsequent late dates or charge-offs are like the kiss of
death. Look for any mistakes. Look for any black marks, and try to
fix them. Often you can pay up on a charge off, and they will re-report
you as clean and up to date. Missing items are also important.
It is not uncommon to have a pretty good credit score even 5 years
after a bankruptcy assuming that any new credit is handled carefully.
That is why I find it somewhat unusual to have a low score 10 years
later when you say you have behaved well. You might want to post
your score...maybe it isn't that bad afterall.
