Conrad & celtic jewellery .
According to Conrad's sources, the claddagh originated as a sort of commercial
symbol to begin with (the area of commerce in question being the world's
oldest profession). If you accept this version of the origins of the claddagh
ring as a symbol, how much more cheapened could it get? :-) Be that as it
may, whether such a tale is accurate or not, the claddagh as a symbol would
appear to have a different meaning to individuals today, with neither its
purchaser nor its wearer facing any sort of moral judgement because of it
(unless you're Conrad and you want to read a support of violent republicanism
into almost any Celtic imagery that can be worn or displayed).
I agree that the claddagh is hardly unique, but what's wrong with popularity?
Some of us choose to be unique in our tastes, but should those who don't share
such preferences face condemnation for choosing something commonplace? In my
opinion, that's starting to sound a bit too much like snobbery.
My entire point is that Celtic Jewelry is wonderful and that there are many
new artists trying to make a living making it.
Money spent on claddagh designs which now fill the world is denied to them.
I am a strong supporter of things celtic and if any one thinks that the
republican
murderers have anything to do with celtic culture they are dead wrong.
It is truly unfortunate how the celtic music, festivals and art have been
adopted as a maks by the gunmen and men of violence.
Yes the symbol has different meaning for different folk. However, be it
known that all stories relaing to the claddagh symbol are recent (100-200
years) theres is nothing earlier that is celtic. The symbol is over used and
over produced.
So special is defined by the people involved. Unique however it is not. It
is kitsch
-whatever turns you on but please consider what fine altenatives there are
before
you purchase a claddagh design. Consdier the artists who are doing fine work
reviving celtic patterns and styles and adding to the ancient tradition
before you make your selection.
