Retail Shopping Recs in LA Fashion District?

I started wondering if some of our other fashion insiders could

provide shopping tips/recommendations for those of us who go there to buy

retail. There are a few places I usuallly go to when I visit the district,

but I can't really remember the names of them, I just sort of know where

they are. One thing I find is that the inventory of trendy LA stores like

"Image" can usually be had in the Fashion District at significantly reduced

prices. However, I don't know where to go to get higher end items, or if

that's even possible for a retail shopper. Other items I find deals on are

perfume/cologne, and drugstore cosmetics which I usually get for about half

of what I pay at my local drugstore. Also, a lot of places are closed on the

weekend, so it's better when I find a way to go during the week. I also have

been successful at bargaining there. That's all I know. Any other expert

advice would be appreciated?
I went to the web site and requested a free map/guide. It arrived in the

mail just 2 days later. It's basically got the same info as the web site,

but you can pocket the map and put it in your purse.

depending on when/what day of the week (Fridays are excellent.)

you can get into the Cooper Building and the Mart.

One place you do want to check out is Santee Alley. This is a place akin to

those bazaars seen in Morocco or Mexico where you should be able to barter

providing you buy enough. Also do check out the quality. Realize the items

sold from Santee Alley vendors are knockoffs or overruns.. YMMV and Buyer

Beware.. however if you don't want to spend a couple hundred for Gucci-esque

sunglasses or want some of those hippie inspired tops or fun things like

handbags, shoes and jewelry, head over there. It;s definitely an experience

also there is a store across from the Helms Bakery bldg (now an ABC home

store derivative) that is also a great place to score really great clothing.

ditto some places out in the Valley which might be too hard to navigate.

If you want REAL vintage, check out paperbag princess at Robertson &

Olympic.. the store just moved relatively recently and they even have an

excellent selection of tiaras .
