A Diamond Is For What?.
If fine jewelry is given, serious bucks are spent. If it is really
inexpensive (yes...all relative to income), it is not so special
that a really big whoop-de-doo should be made. $500 earrings? $500
digital camera? $500 leather jacket? Is one more special than the
other? Does the cost determine it or the object itself? Or the
relationship between the people?
I've only bought a diamond for an ear once, and that was for me.
Based on that limited exposure, I'd say the $500 earrings would
outspecial the $500 camera and the $500 leather, because the difference
between run-of-mill earrings and $500 earrings is probably greater than the
differences between run-of-mill camera and $500 camera, and between
run-of-mill leather jacket and $500 leather jacket.
During the brief period between our first date and becoming engaged, Glen asked
me "So, what's your favorite kind of diamond." I said, "Big!" He laughed and
said, "No, I mean what cut." I said that I liked round, baguette, and princess
cut. He had an engagement ring made with all three..
