some informations about Dept Of Education?

I'm facing a dicey situation that I would like to get feedback on from

others. My situation is this: I have been diagnosed with

schizoaffective disorder. I do not work and live on my SSI benefits. I

was just recently contacted by a debt collector, acting on behalf of the

U.S. Dept. of Education, about a student loan that I defaulted on years

ago. It is a very old loan and it has accumulated to a very high amount

as a result. I am unable to pay it back and I'm in a quandry about what

to do about it. A lawyer has told me about something called a

"disability discharge" (ie. you can get it if you are considered unable

to work) which if I qualify for will relieve me of my student loan

obligation. The thing is, what if I apply for it and am denied, would I

be at any risk of losing my SSI benefits? I don't feel ready to work no

matter what someone else may think and I don't want to risk facing that

situation and possibly losing all the progess I've made in my health up

till now. I'm hoping there are others out there who have been in or are

in my situation. If you are or know something about it, please advice

me. Really, really appreciate any info. I regret to add that time is

of the essence.
