Debt collection
These days, about fifty percent of the American Population is already living in debt. People are always living out of their means and credit cards make it even easier than ever to go into debt. It seems that the more debt we get in to, the more credit we try to take out as a means of making up for it. People are often getting more credit cards so that they can use them to juggle their payments. By juggling payments I mean that many people will use one credit card to pay the balance of another etc. this is the worst thing that you can do because it often means that most of your possessions are also paid for in this manner. Sooner or later, you are going to have a real problem because you will eventually over extend yourself to the point of no return. This is when debt collection becomes a part of your life.
One way that companies etc. will try to get back their money is to simply repossess your goods. Nothing could feel worse than having a repot-man come to your home and take your things away; especially because this often happens in front of all of your neighbors. Debt collection can also come in the form of the bank putting a lien on your house or in you being forced to auction off your things. Of course, this only happens when the debt you owe is on your home or a bank mortgage loan. Debt collection is different in every state. You can learn about your state’s debt collection practices by calling your attorney general’s office or going online to your state attorney general’s website.
Debt collectors generally contact you by phone or in letters informing you of what actions can be taken against you if you do not make a full payment or if no payment arrangements are made. Most collection laws are geared toward ensuring that your family etc. can’t be touched by harassment from collection agencies. Generally, all you have to do is call them or write them a letter requesting that they not call you any more. In the end, collection agencies will likely take you to court if you do not pay, but that is all they can actually do.
