Customer reviews at amazon.com
Customer reviews at amazon.com make it sound like this player is easily
hacked via the remote control to pay discs from any region -- including PAL
discs -- on an NTSC TV.
1) Is this true?
2) Is this repeatedly changeable, or is this change limited to working just
five times, ala the RCE 2 (I think that's what it's called) stuff I read
about earlier today?
3) Customer reviews also seem to indicate that the quality is a bit
hit-or-miss, and you may or may not get a model that actually works on your
first try. Assuming the answer to both of the first two questions is "yes,"
are there models with similar features that are more reliable?
I think that the scan SC2000 is basically the same as this player. (I'm sure
people will say if I'm wrong ;)
The early reviews of the SC2000 point out the same quality issues, but the
later versions have had this sorted. I bought an SC2000 and have been pretty
happy with it (though it's my first DVD player so I have no frame of
reference to compare its quality). The region setting is done by the remote
control and opens it up to all regions. I've not been able to turn off the
Macrovision though (that's my next group posting!)
Scan as a company have a sketchy support history if things go wrong. I've
had few problems with them, but I can go there in person as I live locally
to their premises in Horwich. They've got a newer player - the SC2500 - out
now. No idea how good or bad that one is.
