Custom CRM solution question
I'm looking for suggestions on the topic of Disaster Recovery for NT 4.0.
Here's my scenario:
I have an NT 4.0 server, setup as the PDC of DomainX. It's a PIII,
RAID 5 via 5 X 9 GB SCSI HD's, the RAID controller is an AMI, built
onto the mainboard. I have an Adaptec ISA SCSI card which my HP DAT
(Surestore) drive attaches to. Ethernet is onboard Intel.
Besides being the PDC for the domain, it's also a fileserver, and has a
number of apps, like our accounting solution, a custom CRM solution,
Tapeware, and a few others installed. There are no other identical
machines in the office.
My question, what happens if the entire PC is (god forbid), lost?
Does anyone have any experience with HP's OBDR? If so, I imagine the same
hardware has to be used over, right? Failing that, what is the best way
to recover an NT server armed only with your latest backup and the OS?
What's going to happen to my apps that were installed?
Any ideas?
I would use a backup program that will create a self booting recovery disk,
or other self booting media (some drives and backup software will boot from
tape). Then the backup program will restore you entire disk including
operating system, application software and data.
Now if the computer itself goes out, and is replaced with another computer
with different hardware, you will have to manually reinstall the OS, and
application software. Data can be recovered from tape assuming you use the
same drive and backup software.
