The CRM learning process! help

We have been using CRM for a little while now. My problem is this; one of
our attributes up to now has been optional for our users to fill-in. So
obviously, some records have data in this field and some don't. We would now
like to make this field required. What will that do to the existing records
already in CRM?? Will I get some kind of error or do they "grandfather" into
the new way?

Thanks and I appreciate all the great Q and A's going on in this discussion,
it has helped me alot in the CRM learning process!
AFAIK it shouldn't cause a problem. If you open up an old record that does
not have a value in the required field it would just mean that the system
would want a value putting in there before it could be re-saved.

If you are using version 3.0 then you could do an advanced find to locate
all the records where your field does not contain data and then use the
Actions -> Edit function to update that field with a default value on those
records. Only trouble is you would need to do it on each page of the
returned list.
