seven years and a few months ago my local cable company took me
to collections. I moved and mistakenly took the cable box with me. I
noticed my mistake when I was unpacking my stuff. Therefore, I called
the cable company and they told me to mail them the box. A few months
later, I received a letter in the mail notifying me that the cable
company had put my account on collection status. Apparently, the cable
box was lost in the mail. At that time, they sold my account to some
collection service company. Now that seven years has passed, I
expected the derogatory mark on my credit to disappear. I recently got
a copy of my credit report and found that the company that purchased my
account from the cable company has sold my account to a different
collections agency. Does this mean that I now have to wait an
additional seven years before this can be cleared from my credi
1) Dispute the item to the credit reporting agency. And check the other
2 to make sure they don't have it. If they do, dispute them also.
2) Notify the collections agency that they are in violation of the FCRA
and to remove the item.
3) If 1 & 2 don't work, file a complaint with the FTC.
And for future reference, you should have sent the box back by a
traceable method such as UPS or FedEx.
