It's up to the issuer. Gold cards are _more likely_ to have benefits
like travel insurance, cdw on rental cars, etc.
What does a Visa Gold card do for me?
Check if there is the term "up to" on the pre-approved credit limit. If
I see that term and I know I am not supposed to get that credit, I'll not
apply. Only if it is a definite pre-approved credit limit that I want to
get, then I'll give it a try. Having a lot of credit cards and check my
creit reports frequently, I know approximately what credit line the
creditors will grant me. So, I won't waste my time and hurt my credit
report to apply for a card with low limit and being rejected which leave
another inquiry on my credit report.
Being a poor college student doesn't mean that you can't get high credit
line (of course, depends on how you define "high").
