What causes acid reflux?
Acid reflux is the disease that happens when hydrochloric acid (stomach acid) starts to erode the esophagus. Some symptoms heartburn, chest pain, and several other symptoms. Spicy foods can agravate this condition. With proper medication, it can be easily controlled.
Reflux is caused by the acidic contents of the stomach being propelled through the lower esophageal sphincter into the esophagus (food pipe).
Causes:
Spicy food
Alcohol
Coffee
Tight clothing (compresses the abdomen causing the food to be pushed through the Esophageal sphincter)
Smoking
Stomach ulcers
Hiatus Hernia
Zollinger Ellison syndrome
Certain medications
Incompetent lower esophageal sphincter
Treatment:
Ant-acids -- Gaviscon, Tums, Milk of Magnesia
Medications: H2-Receptor blockers - Cimetidine, Ranitidine
PPIs - Proton pump inhibitors -- Omeprazole, Lansoprazole, Esomeprazole
Also, it should be said to eliminate the risk factors above, if possible, and don't over eat!!!!
