Canadian student loans and k1
Q. My fiance has a student loan in Canada he is still paying. Has anyone been in a similar situation, can he just continue pay after he moves here? I know it may sound silly, but I don't know if there are any legal issues with moving from Canada to the US while still paying a debt, or if it becomes a big pain in the arse LOL.
A. Yes he can and should continue paying his student loans. It is my understanding that Canada takes the non-payment of these loans very very seriously and will eventually track him down for repayment. My niece-in-law defaulted on her student loans and they deducted the monies owed from her tax refunds. Bear in mind your husband will have to file for non-resident status in Canada. They will know where to find him if they choose to. It would help if he still had a Canadian account. But because he will be living and working in the US and probably not have an "income" in Canada, guess he will have to pay with an international money order obtained at the USPS. That would be the easiest way. Jim retained all his bank accounts in Canada because he has Canadian income so it is easy for him to pay his mortgage, credit card, etc. in Canadian funds. BTW you might be surprised to learn the number of people who use migrating as a form of ditching their financial obligations in their home countries. .
