I'm English, and have recently come to the US (two weeks ago) and I
have to take a Californian driving test next week.I have a valid
British license and have passed the written part so I now have the
drivers permit which if I was a new driver would allow me to take
driving lessons and drive in the presence of a qualified driver over
18.Now the questions:

1.Can I still drive legally using my British license(I believe my
H1 visa means I'm a non-resident,its not a greencard...)

2.If 1.then does that mean I can turn up at the DMV by myself
without a qualified driver to hold my hand - the drivers handbook
says you must bring "a qualified driver" to the test.

I moved here from Canada a few years ago. Due to some delay to move into
the house I bought,I had been here over a month before I picked up my
truck from the movers. So I was theoretically against DMV regulation
for both my driver's license and my registration.
I went to the DMV for both my driving test and registring my truck at the
same time.Took the driving test first, using my truck with expired Quebec
registration.
