Acid Reflux medication
My son - 6 years old - just started prilosec for his acid reflux. It has to be given with a syrnge orally. He totally hates it! Its gross tasting! Does anyone have experience giving this medication? Is there anything that I can tell the pharmacy to do to make it taste better? Help! its just sooo sad to see him this upset everyday!
I am giving my daughter Zantac, which is pretty awful, too. After a few weeks of torturing her by putting it by her cheek and blowing in her face to get her to swallow, the doctor (who also had a child with reflux) recommended getting a Munchkin medicator, mixing her Zantac (which I keep in the fridge... apparently it doesn't taste as bad cold) with 2 ml Maalox, and giving it to her in that. I am attaching a link to the medicator (which I got at the supermarket), so you know what to look for.
My daughter takes zantac for reflux. you could try putting it in an ounce of formula, or breastmilk in a bottle. you could try giving it by syringe by putting a little bit at a time between the side of his cheek and his gums and rub his neck to get him to swallow. or maybe try putting the medicine in just a bottle nipple and see if he'll take it from there. The zantac my son is on smells pepperminty (not sure how it tastes, i didn't taste it) and he usually has no problem taking it when it's mixed with a little formula or breastmilk. If you still can't get your baby to swallow the medicine (or his discomfort in taking it is too much) ask your doctor to maybe switch to zantac if he recommends it.
