An anti-aging skincare question for the docs...
Ok, the magazines are full of ads for the latest and greatest skin goos. There
is editorial coverage of every new face cream, and gimmick to try and turn back
time. I've begun to realize if the last cream did what they said it would, they
wouldn't need to introduce this new one .
Question is, what is being written up in the dermatolgy journals as REALLY
working to firm the skin, and reduce lines. Are their medical studies that show
vitamin C products really build collegan, or copper peptides repair the skin.
In these journals are their presentations, and published research studies of
any new thing that does have real effects on the skin? Anything on the
immediate horizon? If so what, and in what area is this research going in?
-Most research is showing that healthy lifestyles (no smoking, moderate
alcohol, sun avoidance, etc) is probably the best method for keeping
young looking skin. On the molecular level the medications that are
anti-oxidants (Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Co-Enzyme Q 10, etc) are being found
useful as are those drugs that help with repair of collagen and elastin
fibers such as Retin A or Renova.
-I'm not a doc admittedly but I do read various reports that I download from
a university medical database... Antioxidants are supposed to be proven to
reduce accelerated ageing if you use them over time, good for sun damage,
smoking etc. This was written up by some Swiss study in about 1998 I think.
The only thing with that in regards to products is that most big-name-brand
products don't actually contain enough of the active ingredient to do much
anyway.
I've also been reading things lately about the presence of tretinoin (i.e.
Retin A) in rose hip oil, producing similar benefits to Retin A but without
the severe irritation...
