Anti-aging diet in the Biosphere 2
Dr. Roy Walford (author of the 120 Year Diet) is the doctor in the
Biosphere 2 and responsible for the diet of the eight subjects sealed
inside. They are on a low calorie diet (1780 kcal/day), low in fat (10%
of calories) and nutrient-dense.
Results after only 6 months: Mean weight decrease of 16% in men, 11%
women. Percent body fat of 8.5% men, 18% women. Mean systolic BP
decreased 18%, mean diastolic BP decreased 21%. Mean total cholesterol
decreased 35% with ratio of total to HDL staying the same. Mean fasting
glucose fell 18%. All eight have total cholesterol level below 140
mg/dl.
All these changes are similar to the results obtained using low-calorie
nutrient-dense diets with rodents who also obtained significant
prolonged life spans.
-Does anyone have information on this diet? What do they eat, exactly?
Thanks in advance,
-What's your source, I'd like to read it too.

Try one of Walford's books called "One-Twenty Year Diet". (It is
alphabetized under this title in books in print, although the cover
has the digits 120.) He has some less-than-wonderful recipies, and an
excellent exposition of the principles involved so people can attempt
to make their own recipes. The book points to software that can help
you make your own diets.
I bought and tried the software. It does what it says it does, but
that isn't enough to make workable diets. The problem is that it's
nearly impossible to get 100% of the RDA of all nutrients from food
every day. The only reasonable strategy is to try to average 100% of
the RDA of all nutrients over the span of several days, but the
software thinks about only one day at a time.
