Severe acne at 10yrs

My daughter has severe acne and is only 10 years old.
We are to visit a specialist on 23/10/99 and could possibly be prescribed
accutane.
Any comments please
-.That such a blow to have it so early. I went on accutane about 2
months ago, and im 19. The side effects suck but the end results will be worth
it. 10 yrs old is a little to young, but if its bad enough, then why go through
the torture many of us did in school. Trust your DR and god bless.

-I have been doing a lot of research on the net and I have read a lot of
things that those who are still growing should not use accutane. From what
I understand it can potentially interfere with normal growth.

-My daughter developed acne at 10 yrs old also. She is now 13 and is under
control, more or less.

I applaud your taking her to a derm immediately. No use trying to handle true
acne with just over the counter meds.

Since I agree with previous comments that Accutane is not appropriate for young
folks, I'll tell you what we're doing so you see there are alternatives.

My daughter is on Doxycycline 50 mg/twice/day, Differin at night, and uses John
Popelish's Head & Shoulders treatment daily. (Yes, John, I said daily. If I did
that to my skin I'd peel like a lizard, but she seems to do well on that
schedule). When she gets a pimple she dots it with a sulphur solution we got
from Selfcare.com (D'arcy Drying Lotion). She used 10% Benzyl Peroxide for two
years and still uses it occasionally when she feels like her skin needs a break
from its normal routine.

Ok, that sounds like a lot, but it's really quite manageable.

The other alternative, and it's one we intend to try in another 6 months or so,
is to put her on birth control pills. Some women react well, some don't. If
you're in the UK, Canada, or Australia (perhaps other places too) you can get
Diane-35, which seems to be the best. If in the US you can try
Ortho-Tri-Cyclen.

She also avoids chocolate because, despite all the scientific evidence to the
contrary, my years of acne suffering clearly demonstrate that eating chocolate
makes me break out. My daughter seems to be the same.
