Acid Reflux Alcohol
A friend of mine has been a heavy drinker for about 5 years now. He
experienced a bunch of related health problems, such as acid reflux problems
and others.
He quit drinking about 3 days ago and seems serious about
staying off the stuff (going to meetings, etc.) anyway, he complains of cold
sweats in his sleep, and hasn't been able to eat for several days now.
Are there any herbs that can temporarily quell his problems, and maybe help in
the detox process?
Since he stopped, he has been smoking cigarrettes very heavily, and drinking
gallons of water, Gatorade, coffee, and anything else he can get his hands on
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is reputed to be very useful in assisting the body in
processing alcohol, which is dealt with like sugar or carbohydrates in the
human body. L-Glutamine, an amino acid, has been reported to help alleviate
alcohol cravings.
Other way round. Alcohol stops your body from absorbing thiamine.
Alcoholics are always treated with thiamine when they arrive in
hospital, but it's not to help them process alcohol, it's because
they've always got thiamine deficiency.
Look up "Korsakoff's syndrome" and "Wernicke's encephalopathy" for
what alcohol-induced thiamine deficiency can do to you. I once
spend a summer working, inter alia, with alcohol casualties having
those conditions. Started out with a not-much-below-average alcohol
intake but by the time I left the very idea of a beer was giving me
the willies.
